In the sea for posidonia

Organized by the Frosinone Latrina Chamber of Commerce, Informare, Golfo Vivo and the Municipality of Formia, the second edition of “In the sea for posidonia” took place on September 28, 2024, a wide-ranging event with the aim of restoring the sea of the Gulf of Gaeta to its ancient glories of good environmental health. The symbol of this initiative was posidonia, a marine plant endemic to the Mediterranean that the Gulf of Gaeta was once rich in. Then, with environmental degradation, the posidonia meadows in front of Gaeta, Formia and Scauri became extremely rarefied, reduced to a few tufts scattered here and there. “In the sea for posidonia”, therefore, in addition to the famous marine plant, wanted to revive an ecological conscience in public opinion in order to make our sea as it once was: clean and free of waste. The event of September 28 consisted of a swim across the Gulf of Gaeta by the athlete Erasmo Marciano, which took place from the Scauri dock to Gaeta. In the afternoon, at 3 pm, at the G.H. Villa Irlanda, a conference was held on the topics of environmental restoration and the establishment of marine protected areas in the Gulf of Gaeta. Numerous speakers, sponsors and patrons: Lazio Region, Frosinone Latina Chamber of Commerce, Confcommercio, Legambiente, Mare Vivo, Parco dei Monti Aurunci and many others, including the Interdepartmental Research Centre for the Environment (CIRAm) of the University of Naples “Federico II” with the director Prof. Giulia Guerriero, Ispra, the Consorzio Turistico Città di Formia with the President Dr. Giuseppe Ferraro, the Golfo Vivo association with the president Giovanni Castorina and others. The environmental problems of the gulf were thus thoroughly examined, including first and foremost the various types of pollution. The conference and post-conference discussion were structured around these issues and the eco-sustainable measures to be adopted to save our sea.
